Both choirs rounded of the 2013-14 season with performances at Caerphilly’s “Big Cheese” festival. The venue was the historic Great Hall of Caerphilly castle.
The choirs treated a packed house to a wide variety of the songs that had been learned during the year.
From the Community Chorus, conducted by Rosie Howarth and accompanied by Ceri Gifford-Berry, we had spirituals, world music, Beatles and the oldest song to survive in manuscript form – “Sumer is icumen in” (yes, that’s the correct spelling for this 13th century song!!). How fitting that this should be performed in the medieval setting of our magnificent castle!
The Children’s Choir, conducted by Nigel Jones and accompanied by Sara Hodges, followed with a mixed programme of choral items and solos from our talented youngsters. The children showed their versatility, singing in Latin and Hebrew (and English, too!) covering a range of songs – some written especially for them. Our soloists performed hits from the world of music theatre with backing provided by the choir.
The 100+ members of both choirs can now enjoy a relaxing summer before returning in September for what promises to be another exciting season of choral singing.
