During May we hosted the Sborissimo choir from our twin town of Pisek in the Czech Republic. In a packed few days our guests visited many local sites – Big Pit, Caerphilly castle, St Fagan’s, Barry Island, Cardiff Bay ……….
Sborissimo gave three performances – a very well received concert for the children of Plas-Y-Felin Primary School where they kept their young audience spell-bound with their superb singing, a community performance at the Cwrt-Y-Castell Bandstand in the centre of Caerphilly, and finally a wonderful concert at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall where they were joined by our own choir.
Sborissimo, conducted by Lenka Halamova, performed a wide-ranging programme from the Renaissance to the present day, singing in many different languages. Czech folk songs and compositions by Czech composers feature highly in their repertoire and the audience was delighted to hear these delightful pieces. A special feature of the choir’s performance was a short liturgical mass where recorders and cello joined the piano to provide a tastefully musical accompaniment.
Our Czech guests were hosted by choristers from the community chorus. As a first venture in hosting it can be said with confidence that it was a roaring success with all participants thoroughly enjoying the experience!
